The Importance of Family

The injured person's family members are often the unseen victims in situations such as this.  They must support the injured person through the sometimes complex and lengthy recovery process while trying to take care of themselves at the same time.  Often, doctors cannot give clear answers as to what to expect in the recovery process or what the ultimate outcome will be.  In fact, different doctors may sometimes give very conflicting information regarding prognosis.  This can be very frustrating and only heightens anxiety and apprehension.

Further, family members often have to take over the day-to-day responsibilities that the injured person once handled in addition to taking care of them as well.  This can create a great deal of stress which can sometimes lead to depression or other emotional struggles.

Brain Power offers support for families in the form of family therapy and a family support group.  Every attempt is made to education family members about brain injuries and what to expect during the recovery process.  Practical suggestions are given on how to handle a wide variety of problems that can occur.  Assistance is given in sorting through the often confusing and conflicting feelings that occur in such situations, helping family members come to understand that these sometimes disturbing feelings are normal in such situations.

The injured person's ultimate recovery is dependent as much on family involvement and support as all the rehabilitation efforts of doctors and clinical staff.  Keeping the family intact and functioning is one of our top priorities.
