A Message from the Director The concept of cognitive rehabilitation or cognitive skills training originated a little over 25 years ago. Back then, our knowledge of the brain and how it functioned was not sophisticated enough for us to know how to best accomplish this task. Treatment techniques were based on a rudimentary understanding of how the brain functioned. While we knew then that the neurons in the brain had the capability of sending out new sprouts (dendrites), a process is called neuroplasticity, we really did not know how to stimulate the brain properly for this to happen in the most optimal way. Consequently, the treatment outcomes were mixed and often not what was expected or desired. However, today we have a very detailed understanding of the neurophysiological functioning of the brain and how to appropriately maximized neuroplasticity. We now know how to properly structure cognitive skills training techniques in order to produce consistent and meaningful improvement in brain function. These techniques have now become so effective that we can now treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders (learning disabilities) with excellent outcomes. Until now, the prevailing belief has been that, if one is born with a learning disability, the only way to assist to work around the underlying processing disorder. Now, the processing disorder can be directly treated. The Brain Power cognitive skills training program is for any individual that has sustained a brain injury with residual cognitive problems. However, Brain Power is particularly effective in treating the high level cognitive problems seen with mild brain injuries. The Brain Power program is also for children and adults who are experiencing learning problems, whether they qualify for special education in the school system or not. Traditional learning centers and the schools provide tutoring for academic problems. This is merely treating the symptom (poor academic achievement). Cognitive skills training treats the problem (weak cognitive skills necessary for learning). Please contact us to find out more about how we can help you or your family member. Bradley A.
